history about name

Harshavardhana

Harshavardhana was an Indian emperor who belonged to Pushibhukti family. He was born around 580 AD and is believed to be the son of Prabhakar Vardhan, the founder of Vardhan Dynasty. At the height of his glory his kingdom spanned the Punjab, Bengal, Orissa and the entire Indo-Gangetic plain north of the Narmada river. He ascended the throne after his elder brother Rajya Vardhana got murdered by Sasanka, King of Gauda. At this time he was just 16 years of age. After his accession to the throne he merged the two kingdoms of Thanesar and Kannauj and shifted his capital to Kannauj.

Harsha was a secular ruler and respected all the religions and faiths. In his early life he used to be a sun-worshipper but later he became the follower of Shaivism and Buddhism. According to the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang, who visited the kingdom of Harsha in 636 AD, Harsha built many Buddhist Stupas. He was also a great patron of the Nalanda University. He was the first to establish the Sino-Indian diplomatic relationships.

He was a good scholar and a noted author. He wrote three plays in Sanskrit namely Ratnavali, Priyadarsika and Nagananda. We can find well-documented record of his reign in the work of his court poet Banabhatta. Bana wrote Harsha Charita, the first historical poetic work in Sanskrit language. Work of the Chinese traveler, Xuanzang also provides a deep insight into the life during Harshavardhana's rule.

He ruled India for almost forty years, and died in 647 AD, leaving behind no heir to the throne. After his death his empire disintegrated.

My visit to Niagara…

On the day before Memorial Day, my colleagues and myself had planned for a visit to the world famous Niagara Falls

Niagara falls is located in Buffalo County, some 300 miles from my place Schenectady.

One of my child hood dreams was to visit Niagara Falls in NY State of US of America.

I had heard about this waterfall that it is one of the 8 wonders of the world.

This dream had set in my tender mind when I was in my high school and one of my best friend Yogi’s brother was in Canada then. He had showed me the photos of his brother at Niagara Falls and the casino behind it. My tender mind then had set this as a goal for my life. Though it now seems to be a small issue, but the path took me through this IT industry. And when I came to US I had this love of visiting the Buffalo County where Niagara falls.

We started for Niagara Falls at 8.30 in the morning towards Buffalo. On the way we saw the Mohawk River that flows though Schenectady. I saw the cows in the waste grassland, meadows and old houses. I was filled with joy after seeing the greenery. We reached Niagara at 1.30 in the afternoon and we ran to the counter to take the tickets to visit the places.

Though lonely in my mind, I was happy at least to have some colleagues of mine whom I consider my friends. I took as much happiness as I could in their presence.

First we went to Wind of the mist, which takes us to the Niagara Falls and shows us both the American as well as Canadian Views. When I saw this falls, my mind ran behind 8 years to compare it with our own World famous Jog falls…

Lot of difference is there between the falls…. Jog is tall, Niagara is wide…Niagara roars all over…Jog roars only with Rorer…these two sisters are a festival to eyes…

Cave of the wind gets you nearer to the roaring American falls. But for our Jog, you have to walk through the steps and forest to catch up with the nature’s marvelous creation.

We had already spent lot of time in waiting and enjoying both eh cave of wind and Wind of the mist. But still we waited to see the color show from Canada. It was marvelous to see that the color of water kept changing and u can see a VIBGYOUR Niagara. After this we waited there to see the crackers show and by the time we finished everything it was 11, we had some food in the Punjabi Dhabha and left to Schenectady

By the time we reached back to home it was early morning 5.30 AM of Monday, i.e. the Memorial Day….
